The story

Where Blackwork comes from

Blackwork is the one family here built around filled area rather than line. It takes its name from Elizabethan blackwork embroidery — black silk on white linen, counted stitch by stitch — and its current energy from contemporary blackwork tattooing, which uses the same logic: no colour, no gradient, just density. The designs are built from a small vocabulary of fills (parallel hatch, cross-hatch, stipple, solid) arranged in hard-edged blocks, so the interest comes from the boundary between two densities rather than from the shapes themselves. These are the designs that work best on dark apparel and on anything small, because they do not depend on fine line survival.
